Nelson Mandela Day is commemorated every year on 18 July and acts as a reminder to South Africans that they have the power to make a difference in others' lives. This day is inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela, and the day encourages South Africans to spend 67 minutes giving back to people by participating in acts of kindness and service in their communities. Mandela Day allows all of us, irrespective of religious background or political stance, to embody values of compassion, integrity, and community.
The New Apostolic Church's young people practise Mandela Day every year, and this year was no different. Throughout the church's young people's body, members of the young people and greater congregations gathered to practise 67 minutes, and in most cases more, of outreach and kindness in their communities. The young people engaged in a multitude of acts of service for Mandela Day, including working at soup kitchens, handing over food donations to local organisations, and assisting in repairing structures in their communities. As is stated in Galatians 5:13, "For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." This was effortlessly practised by our young people, who used their time and talents to serve others with humility, love, respect, and kindness.
