On Sunday, 09 July 2023, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival’s (SICMF) Concert Orchestra was performed as a free concert for the people of Athlone and surrounding areas of Athlone The concert took place in the Silvertown Auditorium.
The performance was conducted by maestro Julien Benichou, recently lauded for his direction of "Way of the Rain", a concert featuring Robert Redford at Carnegie Hall and repeated in Monte-Carlo in the presence of his Highness Albert II, Prince of Monaco.
At the Silvertown Auditorium, Maestro Benichou led the orchestra made up of musicians from various communities of the Western Cape, as well as from Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and international students of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. The programme included Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, Mussorgsky’s Khovantchina overture and Respighi’s Pines of Rome, an awesome orchestral show piece inspired by Rome’s ancient pine forests.
